Hello and Welcome!

I'm James Dobie, a relatively new novelist here in Austin Texas, penning the first of my eight Wallowa Lake Thrillers  only four years ago, though earlier I had written lots of shorter pieces. As with most authors, the main characters in my novels often exhibit pieces of my own history and/or personality. Unlike many authors, however, I write in the SOP, or seat of the pants, style--i.e., starting with a general idea how I want a novel to develop, I craft the plot and narrative as my Muse dictates. I never truly know where that may lead, any more than someone who's simply reading the book would.

I especially enjoy writing tense, descriptive action sequences. And in this male-dominated world, I create unusual, provocative female protagonists who, while vulnerable, find the inner strength to persevere, thus remaining credible. If you like novels full of twisty turns and chills, one of my Thrillers, available in eBook or Print on Demand paperback, should be your next read.

In my early teens in Austin, Texas, I began reading classic Sci Fi authors, like Robert Heinlein and Arthur C. Clark but was soon drawn to edgier suspense and thriller authors like Harlan Coben, Karin Slaughter, and Stephen King. I have always enjoyed writing, starting with the lyrics to songs I composed and performed as a musician. But when I began to write novels, thrillers were what I wanted to create.

Though I started writing full-length novels somewhat late in life, in the past five years, I completed eight fast-paced, pulse-pounding Wallowa Lake Thrillers, each stand-alone, but featuring recurrent characters;  then wrote four individual psychological/paranormal suspense novels; and I'm working on a new one now. I like to invent startling ways of shoving my protagonists (many of whom are feisty females) into grave peril from which they must escape or die. To relax from writing pressures, I enjoy playing rock guitar.

Editing, covers, and promotional costs keep book releases to a minimum--only three eBooks self-published thus far. The most current, Angel of Oregon, was published early this summer. Earlier releases were The Wood Sprite, in 2023, and The Wailing, the previous year.  All three are now available as eBooks and in POD paperback through Amazon or IngramSpark, at a higher price. The Fret Master will be released in the near future. I hope to continue publishing new thrillers once or twice a year.
